New in FINE / Marine 9.1


Convergence booster
Dynamic evolution of non-linear iterations and under relaxation coefficients during the acceleration phase of the boat has been implemented to get 25% of speedup, without any penalty on accuracy.


Convergence checker now interfaced
To avoid useless CPU time when the computation is already converged, the solver automatically stops the simulations when the physical quantities are converged. This interesting tool is now interfaced with smart default values to save time.


Documentation upgrade
4 new demo cases have been added to the documentation package to illustrate the maneuvring operations: roll damping, zig-zag, turning circle, and course keeping are now part of the standard simulations of FINE/Marine. Also, 1 democase for seakeeping based on the Tokyo Workshop 2015 has been added.


Extension of the self-propulsion plugin to double screwed ships
The plugin dedicated to self-propulsion with modeled propellers in sliding grids has been extended to double screwed ships.

Multiprocessors calculations

Multiprocessors calculations are allowed on shared and homogeneous distributed platforms. Non-homogeneous configurations are not allowed.

The following limitations additionally apply:
- Multiprocessors calculations are allowed on distributed platforms in local user configurations provided that the same account is used for all machines,
- Domain administrators are not allowed to run multiprocessors calculations.
- MPICH2 library needs Microsoft .net Framework package before installing NUMECA software otherwise execution of mpiexec.exe will lead to a Windows error message.

Hardware requirements

Next to the standard hardware (monitor, keyboard and mouse), some specific recommendations apply in the use of NUMECA software:
- a mouse with scroll wheel is strongly recommended.
- the monitor should support 24-bit color graphics and have a 1280 x 1024 pixel resolution for adequate visualization.
- an Ethernet card should be installed and properly configured.
- NUMECA Software does not support CXFS (Clustered XFS) and IBRIX disk file systems.

Memory and disk space requirements

The Random Access Memory (RAM) required to run NUMECA software depends upon several factors, in particular including the number of grid points inserted in the grid, the physical models selected (turbulence, adaptation,��), the introduction of non-matching boundary conditions and the selected calculation mode (mixed or double precision).

Similarly, a minimum disk space is required on the hard disk to allow the storage of the project files. The size of these files largely depends upon the number of grid points generated.

More product specific details:

FINE /Marine

The use of minimum 2GB of RAM is mandatory, but the installation of 8 GB is recommended. As a general guideline, about 2 GB RAM is generally required to run a one million nodes project. The suggested swap space should be equivalent to at least three times the RAM installed. For parallel computations, a multi-processors environment with 2GB of RAM per core is recommended. In such case the suggested swap space should be equivalent to at least one time the RAM installed.

Mesh conversion and partitioning for multi-processor calculations requires about 1 GB per million cells. Since mesh partitioning cannot be performed taking benefit of multi-processor environments, access to nodes allowing large RAM (from 4 to 16 GB) may be mandatory during mesh partitioning.

As a general guideline, about 1.6 GB is required to store a one million nodes mesh, with flow solution on disk. The minimum storage is fixed as 400 MB per million cells, but this only guarantees proper restart procedures without direct possibilities for the visualization of the flow solution.

Graphics requirements

NVidia graphics cards are fully supported, installed together with the latest drivers.

NUMECA software makes use of the advantages of the available Graphics Card. Some trouble may however come up with the default driver OPENGL since it may not be supported by the user host computer and machine display. In order to set the system compatible with a more portable driver, typically MSW driver is used under Windows instead. Note however that the proposed drivers are usually less efficient in terms of graphical speed than the default driver.

Enhancements

RAM Concept CONNECT Edition V8 Update 1 includes the enhancements discussed below.

Temperature and Shrinkage Strain Loading
Uniform and linearly varying temperature changes and shrinkage/strain changes can now be specified and applied to RAM Concept members.

AS 3600-2018
The AS 3600-2018 design code is now implemented.

Critical Support Ratio Span Segment Property
A new span segment property to define a critical support ratio has been added for all design codes. When span segments are defined with the automatic support width detection option, the defined ratio places the first and last cross section in the design strip at a distance equal to the specified ratio times the distance from the support centerline to the support face. This change applies to all design codes implemented in the program.
As AS 3600-2018 Clause 6.2.3 requires the first and last cross section in the design strip to be placed at 0.7 times the distance from the support centerline to the support face, the default Critical Section Support Ratio is set to 0.7 for all AS 3600 design codes. A default of 1.0 is used for all other design codes, which will place the first and last cross section at the face of the support for rectangular or square columns and walls.

Defect Corrections

RAM Concept CONNECT Edition V8 Update 1 includes the defect corrections discussed below.

File Is Not Recognized Format Error When Importing AutoCAD 18 DWG/DXF
A file format error occurred when attempting to import drawing files saved in AutoCAD 18. The error prevented the file from importing.

Blank Audit Reports
A blank Audit report was generated when the information in the report exceeded 2 MB.

Long Analysis Times �C Multi-Threading
In some models, multi-threading caused delays during the analysis, which resulted in longer analysis times.

PT Optimization Run Failure Error Due to Generated Jacks
A run failure prevented PT optimizations in models with generated jacks and tendons defined with the ��Strands�� Tendon Specification Type.

Calculation of EC2 Crack Width for Pure Tension Case
For sections with pure tension, the tension zone depth was limited to the section depth for use in the calculation of hc,ef and sr,max. The tension zone depth is now permitted to exceed the section depth. This change could result in changes to the reinforcing ratio (typically reducing it) and can increase crack spacing when reinforcement is not satisfied.

CSA A23.3 Shear/Torsion Tension Calculation
When doing the final check for CSA A23.3 shear/torsion tension for the flexural/axial strength, the program was incorrectly including any provided torsion reinforcement in the determination of Vs when calculating the longitudinal reinforcement capacity in accordance with equation 11.21. This could have resulted in an overestimated Vs, an underestimated shear tension force when there was torsion on the section, and an unconservative reported flexural capacity for the section. When performing flexural/axial design in the design passes prior to the final check, the transverse torsion reinforcement was correctly excluded from this calculation, so RAM Concept��s reported designs for this provision considered this effect correctly.

File Compatibility Warning
RAM Concept CONNECT Edition V8 Update 1 can read all previous file formats, but writes files in a format that cannot be read by previous versions.

RAM Concept is a software application for the structural analysis and design of conventionally reinforced and post-tensioned concrete floors, mats, and rafts. RAM Concept contains an advanced feature set that allows for the design of a wide variety of floor systems including post-tensioned, reinforced concrete and hybrid systems, elevated slabs and mat/raft foundations, one-way slabs, two-way slabs, beams, and joist systems.

Historically, the vast majority of concrete floors have been analyzed by approximating a region of a slab as a frame (or design strip), and then analyzing the frame/strip using variations of conventional frame or moment distribution analysis techniques. There are two limitations to this approach. First, in irregular structures, the approximation of the real structure into a frame model could be grossly inaccurate and designing with the analysis results might not even satisfy equilibrium requirements in the real structure. The second limitation is that even in regular structures with regular loadings, the frame analysis approximates the slab/column interaction and provides no information regarding the distribution of forces across the design strip.

RAM Concept enables the engineer to design post-tensioned and reinforced concrete slabs by using a finite element model of the entire slab. RAM Concept can predict the elastic behavior of a slab much more accurately than frame models. In addition, the finite element method guarantees that the analysis satisfies all equilibrium.

Recommended Computer Specifications for Structural Products

Operating System requirements
Supported: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, Windows 8 Professional 64-bit, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Recommended: Windows 10 Professional 64-bit (all with latest updates applied)

Internet Connection
For the Subscription Entitlement Service (SES) Licensing used in all RAM and STAAD CONNECT Edition software an internet connection is required. A license file can be reserved and copied to a machine in the rare case where no internet connection is allowed.

Graphics card
Bentley strongly recommends avoiding onboard graphics chips in favor of a discrete GPU from the nVidia GeForce or Quadro range with at least 128-bit bus and 1 GB of RAM, or equivalent solution from ATI/AMD.

Processor
While some of the solvers in our structural products can utilize multiple processors, most product routines utilize one processor at a time. Consequently, processor clock speeds are more important than the number of processors for performance. One of our solvers in RAM products uses Intel-provided technology, which only works on Intel brand processors. Alternative solvers still work with AMD or other processors.

Hard Disk
At least 2 GB free space on the partition where the Windows is installed, and 2 GB free space on the partition where projects are saved. Large projects may require significantly more space.

Random Access Memory (RAM)
Recommended: at least 4 GB. Large projects may require more.

Video modes
Required: 1024 x 768 pixels, 32-bit color palette
